South African Disease Institute Reports a Rise in Malaria Cases

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) says it is currently seeing a significant increase in malaria cases, with many severe cases due to late presentation or late detection. "Undiagnosed and untreated malaria rapidly progresses to severe illness, with a potentially fatal outcome," the NICD warned.

South Africa's latest struggle with the disease comes after a report by experts from the Kenya Medical Research Institute which found that a new species, Anopheles stephensi, threatens to derail decades of effort made in the fight against malaria.
