Global Covid-19 Crisis Over, WHO Says

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has announced that Covid-19 no longer constitutes a public health emergency of international concern.

In March 2023, WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus expressed confidence in the progress made against the novel coronavirus, saying: "I am confident that at some point this year we will be able to say that Covid-19 is over as a public health emergency of international concern - and as a pandemic."

However, South Africa's national health department has said it does not mean the pandemic is over. This comes as the Progressive Health Forum - a health advocacy network - are encouraging citizens, particualarly those over 50 years of age, to get vaccine booster shots as winter approaches.
