South Africa Rape Survivors' Personal Info Leaked on Social Media

The leak of private information belonging to eight women who were raped in Krugersdorp during 2022 by the South African Police Service has prompted the authorities to issue an apology.

More than 36,000 cases of rape were recorded in the country in the financial year 2020 - 2021. President Cyril Rampahosa approved three pieces of legislation aimed at fighting gender-based violence and femicide with the move hailed as a step in the right direction in the fight against the scourge.

The three laws were formulated following the 2018 National Presidential Summit on Gender Based Violence and Femicide which gave rise to the country's National Strategic Plan of Gender-based Violence and Femicide.
