South African Govt Affirms Commitment to Hague After 'Error'

The Presidency has confirmed that South Africa remains a signatory of the Rome Statute following an error when a comment made by President Cyril Ramaphosa who said the "governing party" decided to withdraw implied that the African National Congress made the decision at its recent National Executive Committee meeting, that the nation would no longer be a member of the International Criminal Court.

The error resulted in an uproar and comes several days after after Nobel Prize-winning Ukrainian Oleksandra Romantsova, who heads Ukraine's Center for Civil Liberties, called on the government to re-think its friendly relations with Russia as it wages war on Kyiv.

While South Africa's dual commitment to both the ICC and Russia has become a diplomatic headache for the nation, it maintains its support for President Vladimir Putin, who has been invited to attend the BRICS Summit in South Africa in August 2023.
