Using Art to Promote Quality Maternal Healthcare for Women

Listening to woman's voices, needs, and unique perspectives is paramount to improving access to quality, respectful maternal healthcare, write Dabri Olohije Ohanu and Oluoma Omeje for the Nigeria Health Watch.

The Celebrating Womanhood Art Gala is an initiative aimed at raising awareness about maternal health issues through various forms of art. The second edition of the gala was themed "Elevating Women's Voices for Quality Maternal Healthcare" and brought together multi-sectoral stakeholders to advocate for women's perspectives and experiences with maternity care.

The artworks displayed included paintings and photographs that illustrated the challenges faced by women during pregnancy and childbirth.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that in Nigeria, the Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) is 814 per 100,000 live births. The lifetime risk of a Nigerian woman dying during pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, or post-abortion is 1 in 22 women, which stands in stark contrast to the estimated lifetime risk of 1 in 4900 in developed countries.
