Gupta Laywers 'Knew About Failed Extradition Before South Africa'

The United Arab Emirates will not be extraditing Ajay and Rajesh Gupta to South Africa, Justice Minister Ronald Lamola confirmed on April 7, 2023.

The brothers - close friends of former president Jacob Zuma - were to face charges of money laundering and fraud. They were implicated in the State Capture report, which revealed deep levels of corruption in Zuma's government, and in various other state entities, including power utility Eskom.

On April 13, 2023, the Daily Maverick reported that lawyers for the Gupta brothers were reportedly at the UAE court when the failed extradition judgment was handed down on February 13, giving the fugitives a 37-day head start to get away.

The UAE only told South Africa on April 6, in a hasty "note verbale" (diplomatic communication), after reports in the Africa Intelligence news service that the brothers had been spotted in Switzerland, writes Ferial Haffajee.
